Vienna had and still has many well known coffee houses. Schloss Cobenzl, with its interesting past, is however one of the most exceptional. The historical past of Vienna and that of Cobenzl are closely tied.
Originally called „Reisenberg Ober Grinzing“, or for insiders the „Latisberg“, it was renamed Cobenzl after Count Philipp von Cobenzl bought the property.
For many years a Jesuit monastery stood on the present site of Schloss Cobenzl. Count Philipp Johann Cobenzl, a diplomat and a chancellor of Austria who was a well known music patron, bought the property from the Jesuit priests. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and several other contemporary artists were among the world known regular guests of the house
Graf Phillip von Cobenzl
Due to its geographical position Cobenzl became already in its early stage of development a social attraction. In the summer of 1781 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart did reside as a guest of Graf Philipp von Cobenzl in the castle and has been inspired through the unique view over Vienna to one or the other of his monumental masterpiece.
So he wrote in one of his letters to his father Leopold Mozart, "... the wunderful view from Cobenzl to the city of Vienna, but I have to walk for 1 1/2 hours to my Baroness, who I have to teach ..."
